First tattoo tips for beginners

You’ve wanted a tattoo for ages and now you think that you’re ready to get inked for the first time. That’s great! But there are a few things you need to know about getting your first tattoo. Knowledge is power, and once you’ve got the right info you’ll be able to get just what you’re looking for. From taking time choosing a design to essential preparation – like learning how to shave your chest properly, guys – here are five tips for first time men’s tattoos.

  1. Take time choosing your design

Plenty of tattoos have been regretted because they’ve been done in a hurry. So, it’s really important to take your time thinking about the design. Talk to others if need be, but make sure you’re committed before you dive in. Think carefully about the colour you want, placement and style of tattoo, and get a clear picture in your mind. You can always alter your ideas during consultation.

  1. Research artists

Finding an artist that you’re comfortable is key to the whole experience of your first tattoo. Research artists to see what they specialise in, check their portfolios and see if there’s a fit. Once you’ve found the right artist and studio you can arrange to have a consultation.

During the consultation ask as many questions as you can. Any artist worth their salt will be more than willing to answer those questions, offer you advice and generally provide you with all the information you need before you get your tattoo. And they’ll do it collaboratively too. It should be a two-way process that ensures you’re confident and comfortable with the plan.

  1. Look after your skin

You’ve worked on your ideas with the artist and your appointment is approaching. This is the time to start your prep. In the weeks leading up to your tattoo it’s important to look after your skin. The last thing you want is to have to cancel because of a breakout, burn or irritation. If you’ve got any skin conditions that you may have concerns about, consult your doctor to double check that it’s okay to be tattooed.

  1. Trim excess hair

Your artist will more than likely shave the chosen area before they start. But if you’re a particularly hair man, it’s good manners to do a little prep work before you head in. For example, if you were going for a tattoo on your upper body, now would be a good time to refresh your memory about how to shave your chest properly.

  1. Go prepared

The day’s arrived! The last bit of preparation is due. It’s all about prepping yourself for the session ahead and making sure that you’re ready to roll. The following tips will help make the whole process go as smoothly as possible:

  • Drink water. It’s important to be hydrated when you’re getting tattooed, so drink plenty beforehand.
  • Eat. You’ll want the energy, and your body needs the nourishment.
  • Wear something sensible. That means make it easy for your artist to get to the target area. And choose clothing that you’re going to be comfortable sitting around or lying down in.
  • Practise good hygiene. Take a shower. Brush your teeth. The usual.

Put these tips into action and your first tattoo will be an amazing experience!
